Best NFL Rookie Free Agents

Arizona Cardinals- Jaxon Shipley, WR, Texas

Jordan’s little brother got stuck at Texas during a time the Longhorns had no real option at quarterback. Does a great job finding open holes in coverage, which makes him useful in the slot.

Arizona Cardinals- Zack Wagenman, DE, Montana

The Grizzly was one of the best edge rushers in FCS football for the past two seasons. May have to move to a 3-4 OLB instead of playing with his hand on the ground in the 4-3, which could be a challenge.

Baltimore Ravens- Blaine Clausell, OT, Mississippi State

A big part of MSU’s offensive line that helped keep Dak Prescott stay upright and open up holes for Josh Robinson.

Buffalo Bills- A.J. Tarpley, ILB, Stanford

Saw significant playing time in all four years at Stanford and was eventually the captain of the defense his senior year. While Tarpley is on the smaller size his experience playing in one of the nation’s top defenses will help him make the transition to the NFL.

Carolina Panthers- Dean Marlowe, FS, James Madison

The FCS star was a four-year starter and a two time CAA-First team all leaguer. He likes to play close to the line of scrimmage making him a valuable asset against quick hitting offenses.

Chicago Bears- Shane Carden, QB, Eastern Carolina

Carden carries the “system quarterback” label but he will actually be given time to learn and mature if he makes the Bears’ roster. He was second in the nation in passing yards, 4,736 and had 30 touchdowns

Cincinati Bengals- Terrell Watson, RB, Azusa Pacific

Christian “The Nigerian Nightmare” Okoye was the record holder for almost all of Azusa Pacific’s rushing records until Watson stepped on campus. Watson is a power back that could find a way to stay on the Bengals roster as the second version of Jermey Hill.

Detroit Lions – Zach Zenner, RB, North Dakota State

Backs from both of the Dakotas were impressive this year but for different reasons. While Crockett (mentioned below) is more of a shifty back Zenner is a straight-line power runner that could make himself useful in short yardage situations.

Green Bay Packers- John Crockett, RB South Dakota State

While “Taz” does not have the athletic ability that most teams are looking for he is a patient runner and utilizes blockers will. Crockett gained over 5,000 all-purpose yards in college.

Jacksonville Jaguars- Nick Marshall, CB, Auburn

Marshall played quarterback for the Tigers but will make the switch to corner in the NFL. He is a great athlete and his experience at quarterback should help him on the other side of the ball. Jacksonville had success taking a former running quarterback, Denard Robinson, and finding another spot for him on the field and there’s no reason to think they can’t do the same with Marshall.

Minnesota Vikings- Taylor Heinicke, QB, Old Dominion

Was one of the best quarterbacks in FCS despite his lack of size but his stats took a dip when the Monarchs moved up to FBS play. Has an accurate arm and runs a 4.6 40 but unlike most athletic quarterbacks he tends to stay in the pocket which will serve him well at the next level.

Oakland Raiders- Josh Harper, WR, Fresno State

Davante Adams left big holes to fill for Harper and with subpar quarterback play he did as well as he could have. He was a first team all Mountain West selection and will now be reunited with his old college quarterback Derek Carr.
